Tradgardsforeningen is a historic garden squarely in the centre of Gothenburg, minutes from the central station, established in 1842 as a display garden for the horticultural society. It is among Europe's best-preserved nineteenth-century gardens — its original layout, paths and open spaces surviving as planned. Its principal feature is the Palm House: a large glasshouse of 1878 inspired by London's Crystal Palace, built of iron and glass, holding five climatic halls — tropical palms, Mediterranean plants, ferns, seasonal flowers and camellias. Entry to it is free and it opens year-round. Its rose garden is among the largest in northern Europe with over two thousand bushes and around a thousand varieties, peaking from late June through August. The whole garden is free and open daily, and it is the easiest green space to reach in Gothenburg for anyone staying centrally.
