A hillside park in the Vasastan district north of central Stockholm, one of the parks residents use rather than visitors. The hill is rocky and wooded and the park's paths climb it, giving views over the district's roofs from several points. Stockholm is a city built on rock, hills and islands, and parks like this are what remains exposed of that landscape inside the built fabric. The park holds a children's playground, an outdoor summer pool and lawns, and people from the district use it for running and family outings. This is not a sight and that should be clear: there is nothing in it to visit. Its value is as a quiet free green space in a city where everything costs, and that it shows you the Stockholm people live in rather than its visitor centre. The Vasastan district itself is worth walking: early twentieth-century residential streets, cafés, and the nearby Stockholm Public Library, a famous rotunda among the most important works of Swedish architecture. Free and always open.

Vasastan, north of central Stockholm
It is not a destination, and that should be said plainly. But if you are staying in Vasastan or walking to the Stockholm Public Library, it is a good free break with a view over the district. For parks worth travelling to in Stockholm, go to Djurgården or the royal Haga park.
A 1920s building by Gunnar Asplund whose main hall is a vast cylinder ringed with books from floor to ceiling in three tiers. It is among Sweden's best-known modern buildings and entry is free — go in and look at the hall even if you borrow nothing.
