Ver-o-Rio, «See the River», is a leisure complex on a 5,000-square-metre public square on the shore of Guajará Bay in Belém's Umarizal district, opened in 1999 and also known as «A Window on the River». It grew out of the «Ver-o-Rio, Windows Open to the Waters» project, which aimed to give residents contemplative leisure and free access to the bay shore. Belém's long waterfront was historically taken up by factories, warehouses and private ports, hiding the river from its people, until the city began reshaping its use to bring the city closer to the river, which plays a large part in the region's life, transport and economy. The site once held the Panair airline's pier, with a hangar and a seaplane airport from which daily national and international flights left from the late 1920s. Today the complex has stalls selling regional food, benches on the water and play areas, and its finest moment is sunset over the bay and its boats. Entry is free; pair it with the nearby Estação das Docas.
