An Ottoman cannon fortress at the entrance to the «Walled City of Vratnik», on a hill above the old town. It was built between 1727 and 1739 at a place called Jekovac and takes its name from its yellowish stone. It was one of the defence points against the Austro-Hungarian troops in 1878. The fortress was damaged and rebuilt several times, most recently restored in 1998. Its stone walls now enclose an open terrace with a small café and tables looking over the city. It offers one of the finest views of Sarajevo: the old town, the domes and minarets of its mosques, the Gazi Husrev-beg Mosque, the modern buildings and the surrounding mountains, and many come up for sunset. During Ramadan the iftar cannon is fired from the Yellow Fortress at sunset, an old tradition revived after the war, and locals and visitors gather to watch, according to Sarajevo's tourism board. Entry is free and always open. It is a short uphill walk from Baščaršija through the lanes of Vratnik, and you can continue up the hill to the White Fortress.
