Goiânia Zoo is a public zoo run by the city, holding more than 450 birds, mammals and reptiles of 122 species, Brazilian and exotic, on about 200,000 square metres, one of the city's main green spaces, welcoming more than 400,000 visitors a year. Its history is almost as old as Goiânia itself: the farmer Urias Magalhães donated its land in 1933, at the start of building the new capital, to link the growing city with the old town of «Campinas», now one of its districts. Besides caring for wild animals, the zoo runs environmental education, leisure and cultural activities. It suits half a day with the family; go in the morning when the animals are active, before the midday heat. Tickets are usually inexpensive; check opening times and closing days.
