Teatro Goiânia, opened on 14 July 1942, is the most traditional cultural venue in the capital of Goiás and part of the architectural ensemble of the planned city. It was built between 1940 and 1942 in Art Deco with a «Streamline Moderne» influence, an idea of the architects Jorge Félix and José do Amaral Neddermeyer that made the building look like an ocean liner, with flowing curved lines. When it opened it was the grandest venue in the new capital, and it hosted the «Cultural Baptism of Goiânia», the celebrations that officially inaugurated the city in 1942, with the screening of an American film; the same week the Eva Todor company, the leading comedy troupe of the day, performed there. Today the theatre stages plays, music and dance with tickets by programme, and its streamlined building is one of the city's finest Art Deco examples, seen from outside at any time on a walk downtown.
