Zadar's Archaeological Museum is Croatia's second oldest (1832), on the forum square itself โ three floors climbing time: the prehistoric Liburnians (the sea people who preceded Rome here) at ground, then Roman Zadar with statues and forum inscriptions whose hall windows literally overlook that forum โ the cleverest museum-in-situ โ then the early Croat medieval above, in jewellery and interlaced stone. Its pieces are context, not stars: what you see inside explains what you walked outside โ the ideal understanding hour between forum and Donatus, and the merciful shade hour of summer noon. With the Museum of Ancient Glass next door (the region's finest Roman glass, with a live blowing workshop) Zadar's museum pair completes โ an hour each suffices.
