Donatus is Zadar's architectural icon: the massive ninth-century Byzantine cylinder โ among Europe's most important pre-Romanesque buildings outright โ raised by bishop Donatus directly upon the Roman forum's square: stoop to its base and see Roman columns and imperial altars built in as raw stone โ history's recycling at its most honest. Its bare cylindrical interior is empty and solemn โ and its exceptional acoustics made it the summer concert hall (the Donatus Evenings of early music, sixty years running): attend one if it coincides. The forum around it is a free open square: columns, temple steps and scattered altars the evening sits upon with its cafรฉs โ the standing Roman shame pillar where offenders were chained for centuries. The cathedral and its tower adjoin โ the whole site five minutes from the Organ: Zadar's heart one walkable block.
