Zadar's old town is Dalmatia condensed: a walled peninsula split by the Kalelarga โ the Roman street its people proverbially call older than the city itself โ through three thousand years of squares: Roman in remains, Byzantine in churches, Venetian in walls (UNESCO 2017 among Venice's fortifications). Its two Venetian gates are masterworks: the Land Gate with Mark's lion and triumphal arch, Dalmatia's grandest โ and Five Wells Square with the cisterns that watered the city through the Ottoman siege โ People's Square with its town hall the heart of coffee and siesta, the morning market on the eastern wall the daily theatre of greens and fish. It is a city lived strictly on foot (the peninsula practically carless) โ its intimate scale a half-day that prepares its western shore's sunset magic: where the Organ and the Greeting wait.
