**One room painted entire by Giotto in 1305, and taken as the moment modern European painting began** — a World Heritage site. ⚠ **The visit lasts fifteen minutes**, ⚠ **preceded by a quarter of an hour in a conditioning chamber** that stabilises humidity before you enter. **Enrico Scrovegni** built it — ⚠ **his father a usurer whom Dante put in Hell by name** — **in expiation of the family's money**. ✅ **Giotto painted every wall**: **thirty-eight scenes** from the lives of Mary and Christ in three tiers, **a blue ceiling of stars**, and a **Last Judgement** on the entrance wall. ⚠ **What Giotto changed**: **he gave people bodies with weight, faces with emotion, and a space to stand in** — **after centuries of flat forms**. ✅ **And the lapis blue still holds its colour.**

**Because he returned weight, emotion and place to painting after centuries without them.** ✅ **What came before**: medieval European painting was **Byzantine in character** — **flat forms** without volume, **on gold grounds** without place, **and rigid faces** with a single expression; **the aim was a symbol, not a scene**. ✅ **What Giotto did**: **(1) volume** — **he painted bodies with mass under their clothing**, shadowed into three dimensions; **you feel they have weight and occupy space**. **(2) Place** — **he set his figures inside buildings, rocks and landscape** that give depth, **a century before mathematical perspective was invented**. **(3) Emotion** — ⚠ **the most important**: **faces that grieve, rage and hesitate**; **and in the *Lamentation* Mary bends over her dead son** in the posture of a mother rather than an icon, **while angels cry out in the sky**. **(4) Narrative** — **the figures look at one another and react**, making the picture a moment in a story. ✅ **The effect**: **Boccaccio said he brought painting back into the light**; **Masaccio built on him, and then the whole Renaissance**. ⚠ **Which is why this room is a destination**: **it is where the change can be seen complete, in one work**.
