**A medieval hall without a single column in the middle, roofed by an inverted timber structure like a ship's hull** โ between Padua's two markets. Built from **1218** as a courthouse and public hall, **its present roof dates from 1306**. โ **The upper hall (the *Salone*) astonishes by its emptiness**: about **80 metres long, 27 wide and 27 high** โ **with nothing holding it up**; **the arched timber roof carries itself**, and it is among the largest unsupported roofed halls in the world. โ **Its walls carry some 333 painted panels** of astrology โ **the zodiac, the planets and the labours of the months** โ **a calendar painted on a wall**. โ **The ground floor is still a working market**: butchers, cheesemongers and greengrocers under the arches, as for centuries. โ **And a huge wooden horse** stands in the hall.

**By an arched timber structure acting as a self-carrying shell โ and shipwrights knew how.** โ **The problem**: **a hall 27 metres wide** cannot be roofed with straight timber beams โ **no tree is long enough to resist the bending**; **the usual answer is a row of columns down the middle**, โ **which this design refused**. โ **The solution used**: **building a curved timber ยซshellยป** โ a frame of interlaced members forming an inverted arch, **transferring the load sideways into the thick walls** rather than downward into columns. **So the roof works as one coherent structure rather than a series of beams.** โ **The form is familiar**: **it resembles an upturned ship's hull** โ โ **and that is not only a simile**: **shipbuilding carpentry in Venice and its arsenal was the most advanced in the region**, **and the knowledge crossed into buildings**. โ **The present roof dates from 1306**, after **a tornado destroyed the original in 1756 and it was rebuilt** โ โ so what you see is repeated survival, not a single one. โ **The engineering lesson**: **timber is weak in bending and strong in compression and tension** โ **so a successful design converts bending into compression**, which is what an arch does.
