**The world's oldest university botanical garden still on its original site โ since 1545** โ and a World Heritage site. The **University of Padua** created it in **1545** to grow **medicinal plants** and teach medical students to tell them apart โ โ **and confusing a healing plant with a poisonous one killed people**, **so the garden was a safety instrument**. โ **Its original plan survives**: **a circle within a square** โ symbolising the world โ **divided into four quarters by two crossing paths**. โ **It holds "Goethe's palm"** โ a fan palm planted in **1585**, โ **which the poet Goethe saw in 1786** and wrote about in his reflections on plant metamorphosis, **and which is still alive in its glasshouse**. โ **And a modern "Garden of Biodiversity"** with five climates under one roof.

**Because they turned plant knowledge from the copying of texts into direct observation โ the foundation of modern biology.** โ **The problem before**: European medicine relied on **ancient texts** โ **Dioscorides** above all โ **describing plants in words and in drawings copied from copies** across centuries. โ **The practical result was disastrous**: **descriptions were vague**, **drawings distorted by repeated copying**, **names varied between regions**, โ **so an apothecary erred and a patient died** โ **and many medicinal plants are poisonous at a slightly higher dose**. โ **What the garden did**: **it gathered living plants in one place, classified and named** โ **so a student saw, touched and smelled** rather than reading a description. **And two similar plants could be compared side by side.** โ **The wider effect**: **when the plants of the whole world are grown in one place** โ and Padua received plants from the East and the Americas through Venetian trade โ **systematic comparison becomes possible**; **from which botanical classification arose**, and then the idea that living things fall into groups. โ **Padua introduced plants to Europe**: it is credited with an early part in **the sunflower, jasmine and the potato**.
