Romania's loveliest botanical garden: 14 hectares on a hill south of the centre run by Babeș-Bolyai University since 1920 — ten thousand species in sections laid out as a journey round the world: the Japanese garden with bridge, pond and small pavilion, the Roman garden in classical style with its statues, the rose garden, the iris walk, and the alpine slope of Carpathian plants. Six greenhouses hold the tropical house with tall palms and the giant Victoria water lily that flowers in summer, and the water tower at the top climbs for a view over garden and city. The afternoon refuge of students and families, crowded in May with magnolia and cherry blossom. Ninety minutes at least, its gate a ten-minute walk from Union Square.
