Old Yangzhou's best-known street, running 1,122 metres from west to east and about five metres wide; it once linked the old city's Great East Gate with the East Pass by the Grand Canal, so it thrived for centuries as a trading street, and it is listed among China's famous historic streets. Time-honoured shops still line it, among them Simei, known for pickles and sauces, and Xie Fuchun, known for traditional cosmetics, alongside teahouses, craft shops and stalls selling local knives, and old grey-brick houses with wooden doors hung with red lanterns. On the street stand the famous Ge Garden and the Yi Pu garden, the old Wudang Palace, the guildhall of merchants from Shanxi and Shaanxi and the houses of the salt merchants who made the city's fortune, while the old Dongquan Gate stands nearby. The street is free and always open, per visitor guides. The evening, when the lanterns come on, is the loveliest time, and local restaurants use a lot of pork, so ask about ingredients.
