The garden and mansion of the He family, nicknamed «the first garden of the late Qing»; the official He Zhidao built it between 1862 and 1875 and named it the «Mountain Villa for Song and Ease» after lines by the poet Tao Yuanming, and in 1883 he added the neighbouring Pianshi Shanfang garden. Its most distinctive feature is a two-storey covered walkway that winds around the halls and courtyards and links them all, so visitors can circle the whole garden under one roof, while a pavilion in the middle of the pond is said to have served as a stage watched from the surrounding galleries. The Pianshi Shanfang holds a rockery whose design tradition attributes to the early-Qing painter Shitao, and the mansion has decorated halls, among them the Nanmu Hall of precious timber, the largest surviving hall of that wood in Yangzhou, and the Boat Hall, built in the shape of a ship. Tickets cost CNY 45 in the busy seasons and CNY 30 in the other months; it opens from 7:30 to 17:30, and until 21:30 from May to August, per visitor guides. It became a protected national monument in 1988.
