Largo do Machado is a public square in Rio de Janeiro's Catete district, where the Flamengo, Laranjeiras and Catete neighbourhoods meet; its ground was originally a small lagoon, filled in as the city grew. Thousands cross it every day, as it holds the main entrance to Largo do Machado metro station and is ringed by shops and cafés, the heart of the neighbourhood's daily life. Long-standing businesses surround the square, among them the «Rotisseria Sírio-Libanesa» in the Condor arcade, the famous Syrian-Lebanese eatery that has been serving Rio sfihas, kibbeh and Levantine pastries for decades, the historic Cine São Luiz in its own arcade, and the Amaro Cavalcanti school, founded in 1874. The novelist Machado de Assis mentions the square in three of his novels. The square is tree-lined, with benches, a playground and chess tables where older residents gather, and it makes a pleasant stop on a walk between the Catete Palace (Museum of the Republic) and Parque Guinle. It is usually calm and safe by day; watch your belongings as anywhere busy.
