Łazienki is Warsaw's royal paradise: seventy-six hectares the last king, Stanisław August, designed as an Enlightenment summer kingdom — at its heart the Palace on the Isle: a baroque bathhouse turned neoclassical palace floating on the lake between two bridges, its reflection Warsaw's most famous image, its interior (spared demolition by restoration's miracle) the king's painting halls. The park is a continent of buildings and scenes: the Roman theatre on its island facing its audience across the water, the Old Orangery with its original wooden court theatre (one of three left in Europe), the Belvedere palace at its rim — and its residents its stars: peacocks strutting fearless and squirrels literally eating from hands. Its most famous rite is world-known: the free Chopin concerts beneath his great monument (Sundays at noon and afternoon, May-September) — an open piano and a lawn audience since 1959: Warsaw's loveliest tradition uncontested, Chopin being the city's own son.
