Gdańsk is the historic centre of the amber trade, with a whole street of amber workshops and specialist shops, and there are reputable dealers in Warsaw and Kraków. Beware imitations: real amber feels warm and light and floats in heavily salted water, while plastic imitation sinks. Ask for certification on expensive pieces.
Children interested in fossils and rocks, yes — amber with insects inside catches them immediately. But the museum is traditional in its display and not an interactive science centre. The Copernicus Science Centre in Warsaw is far better suited to children generally.

A geological museum of the Polish Academy of Sciences, in two historic villas on an escarpment overlooking the Vistula. Its best-known collection is amber: Poland sits on the Baltic coast, the world's principal source of amber for thousands of years. The museum displays exceptional pieces, among them specimens containing insects, spiders and plants trapped inside for some forty million years — creatures that died in the resin of a conifer and remain complete. Amber is not a marginal detail in the region's history: the Amber Road linked the Baltic to the Mediterranean from antiquity, and Baltic amber reached Rome and Egypt. Alongside it are collections of minerals, rocks and fossils, and a section on the geology of Poland. A practical point: the museum is small and its hours may be limited or seasonal, and part of its space may be under renovation — check before going.
