The lean reached a critical five and a half degrees and it closed (1990); the world tried a simple genius fix: soil extracted by angled drills from beneath the high side let it settle gently back half a degree โ enough for centuries without touching its leaning identity. Reopened 2001, its measurements confirm full stability.
For stair-tolerators yes โ the gravitational sensation is literally purchasable nowhere else on earth. For the content: the field is free and every famous photo is from the grass โ the smarter alternative spending the difference on the square's other passes.
Field and monuments make the ideal half day from Florence (an hour's train) โ add an hour for real Pisa: river, Cavalieri and university lanes; the town is far kinder than its tower-stop reputation.

The Tower of Pisa is architecture's most famous and best-loved mistake: the cathedral's bell tower began leaning at its third storey (1178) โ the ground's clay betrayed the footing โ so they paused a century and finished with a counter-curve straightening the top, producing a tower bowed like a marble banana: a flaw become planetary icon, engineering-rescued by the delicate extraction operation (1990โ2001) that secured it centuries ahead at a stabilised tilt. Climbing it is a bodily strangeness like nothing else: 294 spiral marble steps in which gravity keeps shifting โ pressed on the lean's side, lightened opposite โ up to the bell terrace with the Field of Miracles in its full white below. Tickets run on strict slots and small numbers โ book online weeks ahead in summer, and all bags check free opposite the entrance.
