Before the tower leaned, the cathedral was the miracle: Pisa began it (1064) as mistress of Mediterranean seas, funding it with victory spoils over Sicilian fleets — producing its era's largest church and the mother of Pisan Romanesque, copied through Tuscany, Sardinia and beyond: banded marble, stacked column galleries, bronzes and columns taken from the Islamic world as testaments of the sea century. Inside is a five-aisled basilica of granite columns under a golden ceiling, Giovanni Pisano's carved pulpit (1310) the summit of Italian Gothic sculpture — eight scenes turning in continuous drama — and the apse mosaic of Christ enthroned among Cimabue's last works. Entry is free on a timed ticket from the window or within any pass — a cathedral of this weight without price being Pisa's lovely generosity.

Simple logic: the cathedral is always free; one extra monument about seven, two about ten, all (towerless) thereabouts — the tower separate on its slot. Optimal for the serious: all-pass plus tower; for the brisk: cathedral and baptistery.
