The Municipal Market of Campinas, the «Mercadão», is a historic market in the city centre between Benjamin Constant and Senador Saraiva streets. Its foundation stone was laid in 1907 and it opened on 12 April 1908; the Nogueira family ran it for twenty years before it passed to the city in 1925. It was designed by the office of the architect Ramos de Azevedo and built by the Mazzini brothers under the supervision of the architect Augusto Fried. It shows a Moorish influence, with overlapping roofs that let in natural light and air, and a small railway station stood beside it until 1925. It covers 7,720 square metres, 3,110 of them built, holds 153 stalls and was listed as city heritage in 1982. Chefs and locals come for spices, oils, cheeses, fruit, vegetables, fish and peppers, and it makes a short walk among the smells and colours in the heart of Campinas.
