The Palácio dos Azulejos, the «Tile Palace», is a historic building in central Campinas at the corner of Ferreira Penteado and Regente Feijó streets, also known as the house of the Baron of Itatiba. It takes its name from the Portuguese tiles that clad its upper floor. It was built in 1878 as the home of Joaquim Ferreira Penteado, Baron of Itatiba, and his son-in-law. In 1908 his heirs sold it to the city, which joined its two buildings into one and housed the court and the town hall there until 1968. It was listed in 1967 at federal, state and city level, and is one of only two buildings in Campinas listed by the national heritage institute; it was built using both rammed earth and brick. Since the 1990s it has housed the Campinas Museum of Image and Sound and part of the city archive, and it was restored in 2004. Guides list entry as free with weekday opening hours, so check times before you go.
