Praça Carlos Gomes is a garden square in central Campinas, São Paulo state, designed by the architect Ramos de Azevedo and named in 1880 after the composer Antônio Carlos Gomes, a son of the city, as a tribute paid while he was still alive, something quite unusual in Brazil at the time. In 1883 a hundred imperial palms were planted around it, most of which still stand, and in 1914 the square was levelled and landscaped and given a bandstand that is still there, made by a local firm that was one of the first in its industry. Its corners hold two monuments, one to the jurist Ruy Barbosa and one to Tomás Alves, the doctor who fought the 1889 yellow fever epidemic, and from the square you can see the Itatiaia Building, Oscar Niemeyer's only project in Campinas. The square was a gathering place for families listening to bands and still hosts markets and events. It makes a short stroll among the palms in the heart of the city, close to the Palácio dos Azulejos.
