The Panorama is the nineteenth century's surviving cinema: a colossal circular painting — 114 metres around by 15 high — painted by Kossak, Styka and their team (1894) in nine months for the centenary of Racławice: Kościuszko's scythe-armed peasants' victory over Russian artillery (1794) — partitioned Poland's hope painted as a complete horizon. The experience is immersive before the word existed: you stand on the central platform with the battle around you at 360 degrees — real ground (earth, wagons, weapons) melting into the canvas without visible seam: the eye fully deceived, hunting the join in vain. Its story has a second act: the Soviets banned it forty years (a victory over Russia unshowable), rolled in storage — until Solidarity wrested it out and the 1985 opening became a national event.
