A Polish military commander and nephew of King Stanisław August. He led the Polish army of the Duchy of Warsaw that Napoleon founded, and Napoleon made him a Marshal of France days before his death. At Leipzig in 1813, with the French army retreating, he took on covering the withdrawal, was wounded several times and refused to surrender, then tried to cross the Elster on horseback and drowned. He became a symbol of military honour in Polish memory.

A palace adjoining Warsaw's Royal Castle, older than it in parts, and run today as part of the castle museum. Its name comes from a practical detail: its roof was tin at a time when most roofs were tiled, so people knew it by that, and the name stuck. What is inside matters more than the name: the apartments of Prince Józef Poniatowski, preserved with their early nineteenth-century furniture. He was the nephew of Poland's last king and a military commander who drowned in the Elster river in 1813 covering the retreat of Napoleon's army at Leipzig, having refused to surrender. The palace also holds a collection of oriental carpets among the most important in Europe — Persian, Caucasian and Anatolian rugs assembled by Teodor Mayer — which is a surprise in this setting. The ticket is usually part of the Royal Castle's tickets or separate at a lower price, and it is far quieter than the castle next door.
