Verona's first basilica of about 380 AD with its mosaics โ found beneath Sant'Elena, the later churches stacked above it. You walk the glass over a floor fourth-century Christians prayed on: the city's oldest Christian point literally underfoot.
Make it the midpoint of the river-bend walk: from Erbe through shaded lanes to it, the half hour inside, then the back bank to Ponte Pietra and the hill for sunset โ Verona's most complete half day.

Verona's cathedral is a complex of stacked ages in the old city's quietest corner, where the Adige makes its loveliest bend: a striped Romanesque front whose porch the knights Roland and Oliver have guarded in carving since the twelfth century, a late-Gothic interior in rosy marble, and its artistic summit โ Titian's Assumption in a left chapel: a great Venetian in a Veronese house. But the complex's treasure lies beneath and behind: the church of Sant'Elena with fourth-century basilica mosaics under its glass floor, the baptistery of San Giovanni with its octagonal font carved from a single marble block โ a masterwork of Romanesque sculpture โ and the canons' cloister on paired columns. A half-hour visit tells sixteen hundred years โ then take the bank behind it: Verona's calmest river walk, minutes to Ponte Pietra.
