The first bridge across the Yangtze in Chinese history, opened in 1957 after plans first drawn up in 1910 had long gone unrealised; it linked northern and southern China by a continuous railway for the first time, and people call it «the First Bridge of the Yangtze». The bridge runs about 1.6 kilometres from Turtle Hill in Hanyang to Snake Hill in Wuchang on two decks, the upper for cars and the lower for trains, with traditional towers under Chinese roofs at each end, and from it you see the Yellow Crane Tower on the far hill. Its upper deck has pavements for pedestrians, and walking across from bank to bank is one of Wuhan's finest experiences, taking in the wide water, the ships and the three towns that make up Wuhan, with parks beneath it on both banks. Walking on the bridge is free, per visitor guides. The best time is just before sunset, when the bridge and the Yellow Crane Tower on its hill light up.
