Budapest in 2 Days

Two days for a short weekend or a stopover between flights. One bank per day with no backtracking: Pest on the first, Buda on the second, each ending at the river at sunset. We have skipped everything needing a pre-booked tour except the Parliament — if you cannot get a slot, take its façade from Kossuth Square instead and add an hour to your bath.

1Day 1

1Hungarian Parliament BuildingBook the earliest morning tour online, weeks ahead. If there is no slot, skip the interior and take the façade from the square.

2Shoes on the Danube BankTen minutes south along the bank. A silent memorial with no explanatory panels — give it real time, not a passing photograph.

3St. Stephen's BasilicaFive minutes inland. Go up to the dome — a 360-degree view that explains the whole layout of Pest in minutes.

4Dohány Street SynagogueEurope's largest synagogue and the heart of the Jewish quarter. Closed Saturdays and Jewish holidays — check your day before planning.

5Great Market HallLunch on the upper floor at reasonable prices. It closes early and all day Sunday — fit it in before four.

6Little Princess StatueOn the promenade railing as you head back north. Very small and easy to miss — it sits on the railing, not a plinth.

7Széchenyi Chain BridgeEnd the day crossing at sunset and walking back — the castle ahead, the Parliament glowing behind. The best half hour in Budapest.

2Day 2

1Budapest Castle Hill FunicularGo up before nine from Clark Ádám tér. One way only — you walk down at the end of the day.

2Buda CastleOn a two-day trip do not go into its museums: walk the free courtyards and terraces, take the Pest view, then carry on north.

3Matthias ChurchTen minutes on foot through the castle district. Go inside — the tiled roof and patterned interior resemble no other European church.

4Fisherman's BastionRight beside the church. The lower terraces are free and their view is entirely enough — save the ticket price for the bath.

5Gellért BathsWalk down off the hill and take a tram south. Three hours at least — the city's finest bath architecturally, and book online in advance.

6Gellért HillClimb it after the bath, an hour before sunset. The best complete view of the whole city — a fitting close to a short trip.
